If you are a U.S. or Canadian citizen planning to visit Italy from late 2026 onwards, there is one new piece of paperwork you absolutely cannot skip: ETIAS. Without it, you do not board your flight, no matter how legitimate your passport or how perfect your hotel booking.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is a quick, low cost online travel authorization, similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada's eTA. The application takes minutes, costs €7 for most adults, and is valid for three years. But you have to do it before you travel, and you have to do it correctly.
This guide explains exactly what ETIAS is, who needs it, how to apply, and what to do if your application is denied.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a pre travel security screening program created by the European Union, designed to identify potential security or migration risks before visa free travelers arrive at the border.
Italy is part of the Schengen Area, which means the same ETIAS authorization applies to Italy and to every other Schengen country (France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Austria, the Netherlands, and 22 others). If you are planning a multi country European trip, you only need one ETIAS.
ETIAS does not give you the right to enter Italy on its own. Border officers can still ask you about your trip and refuse entry if they have concerns. What ETIAS does is pre clear you so your flight will be allowed to board you, and so your border arrival is faster.
Who needs ETIAS for Italy?
You need ETIAS if all of the following apply:
- You hold a passport from a visa exempt country (U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Japan, and around 55 other nationalities).
- You are visiting Italy or any other Schengen country.
- You are staying for 90 days or less within any 180 day period.
- You are visiting for tourism, business, transit, or short term study.
If your trip is longer than 90 days, or you are working in Italy, you need a proper visa, not ETIAS.
Who does NOT need ETIAS?
- EU citizens and citizens of Schengen countries.
- Citizens of non visa exempt countries (who need a Schengen visa, a different process).
- Children under a certain age and adults over a certain age are typically exempt from the €7 fee but still need to apply. Check the official European Commission ETIAS page for current age thresholds before applying.
When does ETIAS become mandatory for Italy?
ETIAS has been postponed several times since 2021. As of the most recent EU announcements, the system is expected to become mandatory in late 2026, after a phased rollout. There will typically be a transitional grace period of around six months during which arrivals without ETIAS may still be admitted, followed by full enforcement.
Our recommendation: Apply at least 30 days before any trip planned from mid 2026 onwards. The system is online and approvals are usually fast, but you do not want to be the test case at the gate.
How to apply for ETIAS, step by step
- Go only to the official site (travel-europe.europa.eu/etias). There are dozens of look alike scam sites that charge $50 to $90 for the same €7 application.
- Have your passport ready. You will need to enter your full name as it appears on the passport, your passport number, date of issue, and date of expiration.
- Have a payment card ready. The fee is €7, charged once. Children under a certain age and adults over a certain age may be exempt from the fee but still need to apply.
- Fill out the form. Roughly 20 questions covering: personal data, passport data, contact details, education and current occupation, intended Schengen destination, recent travel to conflict zones, and any criminal record information.
- Pay and submit. Most applications are approved automatically within minutes. Some are flagged for manual review, which can take up to 30 days, and a small minority go through a second level review that can take up to 96 hours from the day they apply.
- Save the approval. ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport, so you do not need to print anything. But save the approval email anyway as backup.
Cost
The standard fee is €7 (about $7.50 USD or $10 CAD depending on the exchange rate). Children under a certain age and adults over a certain age are typically exempt.
If you see a site asking for $40, $60, $90, or "expedited processing", close the tab. It is a scam. ETIAS is a flat €7 government fee.
Validity
Once approved, ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During those three years you can enter Italy and the rest of the Schengen Area as many times as you want, as long as each stay is under 90 days and you do not exceed 90 days in any rolling 180 day window.
If you renew your passport, you need a new ETIAS.
What happens if you forget?
If you arrive at the airport for your flight to Italy without an approved ETIAS, your airline will not be allowed to board you. You will need to apply on the spot, which may or may not be possible depending on the system load, your terminal's connectivity, and how close to departure you are.
The safe move is to apply at least 30 days before departure.
What happens if your ETIAS is denied?
A small percentage of applications are denied. Common reasons include: information that does not match the passport, recent overstays in the Schengen Area, criminal convictions, or flags from EU security databases.
You can appeal. The appeal process is set out in the denial email. You can also reapply if your situation changes. If your application is genuinely refused, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa instead.
What you still need beyond ETIAS
ETIAS is one piece of the entry puzzle. You also need:
- A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. With at least two blank pages.
- Proof of accommodation for your trip (a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a host).
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (Italy expects roughly €45 to €115 per day depending on accommodation type). Border officers rarely ask, but they can.
- Return or onward ticket showing you intend to leave within 90 days.
- Travel insurance is not strictly mandatory for U.S. and Canadian visitors, but it is strongly recommended.
The bottom line
ETIAS is fast, cheap, and easy as long as you do three things: apply at least 30 days before travel, use only the official EU site, and double check that your passport details match exactly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ETIAS for a layover in Italy?
Yes if you exit airside (international transit zone) or have an overnight layover that requires entering the country. No if you stay airside in transit and connect onwards.
Can I apply for ETIAS at the airport?
Officially yes, in some circumstances, but in practice you should never count on it. Apply online from home at least 30 days before departure.
Does ETIAS guarantee entry to Italy?
No. Border officers can still ask questions and refuse entry, although this is rare for ETIAS holders with clean records.
How long does ETIAS approval take?
Most applications are approved within minutes. Some flagged for review take up to 30 days, and a small minority can take up to 96 hours.
Can my family apply on one ETIAS?
No. Each traveler, including minors, needs an individual ETIAS application linked to their own passport.
Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is a pre travel authorization for visa exempt nationals (U.S., Canada, etc.). A Schengen visa is for nationals who need a formal visa to enter the Schengen Area. They are different documents.
Does ETIAS work for the U.K.?
No. The U.K. is not in the Schengen Area. The U.K. has its own equivalent system called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which is separate.
Do children need ETIAS for Italy?
Yes, every traveler regardless of age needs their own ETIAS. Children under a certain age may be exempt from the €7 fee, but the application is still required.
What is the official ETIAS website?
The only official site is travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Any other site charging for the application is unofficial.
