The Golden Circle is Iceland's most iconic driving route, connecting Reykjavik, the Kerið Volcanic Crater, the Geysir Geothermal Area where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The route also passes through the geothermal village of Hveragerði, the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir, and the Selfoss countryside. The full loop is approximately 300km and easily driven over several days at your own pace.

Yes Getaways includes a standard small or economy manual car for the full 8 nights. If you prefer an automatic or a larger vehicle, a paid upgrade is available based on availability. Contact the Yes Getaways team when booking to arrange it. A valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license and passport are all you need to drive in Iceland. The minimum rental age is typically 20 years old for standard cars and 23 for 4x4 vehicles.

Roads can be narrow, unpaved, and affected by sudden weather changes at any time of year. F-roads (highland mountain tracks) require a 4x4 vehicle and are typically only open from June to September — they are not accessible in a standard rental car. Always check road conditions before setting out at road.is. Gravel roads, strong winds, and low visibility are common outside Reykjavik. From June to September, sheep roam freely on roads including paved ones. Comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended.

A valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license and passport are all you need. Never let your fuel drop below half outside Reykjavik and the main towns as gas stations can be sparse on some stretches.

In many cases, parking is available complimentary for guests, although some properties may charge a daily fee payable directly at the hotel. Parking policies can vary depending on the location and accommodation selected.

Outside Reykjavik, parking is generally easy to find and often free or low cost. However, you should expect occasional parking charges when visiting popular attractions, national parks, waterfalls, or central Reykjavik, where paid parking zones are common. These fees are usually reasonable and can often be paid via parking meters or mobile apps.

Iceland has a strong food scene in Reykjavik and good options near the Golden Circle including farm restaurants and geothermal bakeries.

Possibly. The Northern Lights are visible in Iceland from late September to mid-April, when nights are long and dark enough. They cannot be guaranteed as they depend on solar activity, cloud cover, and light conditions. The optional Northern Lights Mystery Half Day Tour and Northern Lights Cruise are available as add-ons and give you the best chance of a sighting with a local guide. Summer departures will not experience the Northern Lights due to the midnight sun.

Iceland is a year-round destination but the experience is very different by season. Summer (June to August) offers the midnight sun, long days, open highland roads, and the best driving conditions for the Golden Circle. Winter (November to March) is ideal for Northern Lights hunting and dramatic snowy landscapes. Spring and fall offer a balance of daylight, fewer crowds, and good road conditions. Pack layers regardless of season as weather changes quickly.
