Some German towns decorate for Christmas. Rothenburg ob der Tauber doesn't need to, it already looks like a Christmas card the other eleven months of the year.

Three nights start in Nuremberg, at the Christkindlesmarkt, the original German Christmas market, dating back to the 1600s and set on the Hauptmarkt in front of the Frauenkirche. From there, a train leads to Rothenburg, a walled medieval town where the Reiterlesmarkt fills half-timbered streets, and the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village, one of the largest Christmas shops in Germany, stays open the other eleven months for exactly this reason. Two nights here are enough to walk the town walls, wander the market stalls, and see why photographers return every December.

The trip closes in Frankfurt, with two more nights at the Römerberg Christmas market, one of Germany's oldest, before an easy flight home.

The original market, the storybook town, the easy way home.
