If you are a U.S. or Canadian passport holder planning a trip to Spain, there is one new piece of paperwork you need to know about. It is called ETIAS, and it goes into effect for travelers from most visa-exempt countries in late 2026.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is a pre-travel authorization, similar to the U.S. ESTA. It is cheap, valid for three years, and takes minutes to apply for. But you need it before you fly, and you need to know when the rule turns on.
The short answer
ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a mandatory pre-travel authorization for citizens of about 60 visa-exempt countries (including the United States and Canada) who want to visit Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and every other Schengen area country for short stays.
Once ETIAS is enforced, you must apply online before you fly, pay a small fee, and receive approval. Approval is usually near-instant. It is valid for three years or until your passport expires and allows multiple entries with stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

When does ETIAS actually start?
ETIAS has been delayed several times. As of the most recent European Union communication, ETIAS is expected to become mandatory in the last quarter of 2026, following the launch of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) in October 2025.
Two important nuances:
- There is a transitional period. For the first six months after ETIAS becomes mandatory, travelers who do not apply will still be admitted but will receive a warning at the border. After the transitional period, ETIAS becomes strictly enforced and airlines will not allow you to board without a valid authorization.
- Check the official EU-LISA and ETIAS websites before your trip. Delays have been common. If you are booking a Spain trip in 2026 or 2027, check the current status about a month before departure. The only official application website is travel-europe.europa.eu. Every other site charging you extra is a middleman.

Who needs ETIAS?
You need ETIAS if you are:
- A citizen of one of the ~60 visa-exempt countries (U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Japan, Brazil, and others).
- Traveling to Spain (or any Schengen area country) for tourism, business, transit, or short stays under 90 days in any 180-day period.
- Aged 18 to 70. (Children under 18 and adults over 70 must still apply but the fee is waived.)
You do not need ETIAS if you are:
- A citizen of an EU or Schengen area country.
- A citizen of a country that already requires a Schengen visa (in that case, you continue applying for the visa as before).
- A holder of a valid EU residence permit or long-stay visa.
- Traveling for stays longer than 90 days (a national visa is required, not ETIAS).
How much does ETIAS cost?
€7 per application. That is roughly $7.50 USD or $10 CAD at recent exchange rates. This is a flat fee for adults aged 18 to 70. It is free for applicants under 18 and over 70.
There is no additional processing fee if you apply through the official ETIAS website. Any site charging you $50 or $100 is a reseller adding a commission on top of the €7 official fee. Apply directly at travel-europe.europa.eu and avoid the middlemen.
How long is ETIAS valid?
Three years or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first.
During the three-year validity, you can enter Spain (and other Schengen area countries) as many times as you want, as long as your total stay does not exceed 90 days in any 180-day rolling period.
If you get a new passport before the three years are up, your ETIAS is void and you must apply again.
How do you apply?
The ETIAS application is designed to take about 10 minutes to fill out. You need:
- A valid passport with at least three months of remaining validity beyond your planned Spain departure (Spain requires this Schengen rule strictly).
- A credit or debit card for the €7 fee.
- An email address where the approval will be sent.
- Basic personal details (name, date of birth, address, occupation).
- Travel details (approximate arrival country, first Schengen country you plan to enter, address for at least one night in the Schengen area).
- Security-related questions (criminal record, past overstays, previous refusals of entry to the Schengen area).
Timing: Apply at least 72 hours before departure. In most cases, approval arrives in minutes. In some cases (about 3-5%), applications are flagged for manual review and can take up to 30 days. Do not wait until the last minute.
What happens at the Spanish border?
At Madrid Barajas, Barcelona El Prat, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife South, and every other Spanish port of entry, the border officer will scan your passport and check ETIAS electronically. You do not need to print anything. The authorization is tied to your passport.
You still go through normal Schengen border control. ETIAS does not replace border checks; it just adds an authorization layer that happens before you fly.
ETIAS vs the EES: how they interact
You will hear about two systems, both new, both launching around the same time. Here is the difference:
EES (Entry/Exit System) is a biometric border check that replaces passport stamping. On your first entry into the Schengen area after EES launches (October 2025), you register fingerprints and a facial photo. On future entries, the EES automatically tracks your dates and enforces the 90-in-180 rule.
ETIAS is the pre-travel authorization you get online before you fly.
Both are separate. Both are required. The EES turns on first (October 2025); ETIAS follows (late 2026).
What if ETIAS is refused?
Refusal is rare. The most common reasons are:
- A criminal record for certain serious offenses.
- Previous overstays or violations of Schengen rules.
- Being on a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert list.
- False information on the application.
If you are refused, you receive written reasons, can appeal, or can apply for a Schengen visa through the Spanish consulate instead.
Common ETIAS mistakes to avoid
Applying on an unofficial website. Multiple lookalike sites will charge you €50-€100. Only use travel-europe.europa.eu.
Waiting until the last minute. Most approvals are instant, but 3-5% require manual review. Apply at least 72 hours out and ideally 30+ days out.
Not checking passport validity. Spain, as a Schengen country, requires at least three months of validity beyond your departure date and a passport issued within the previous 10 years.
Forgetting to reapply after passport renewal. A new passport voids your ETIAS.
Assuming ETIAS extends your stay. It does not. The 90-in-180 day rule still applies.
Does ETIAS change anything else about my Spain trip?
Not really. You still:
- Book flights and hotels the same way.
- Travel with the same passport.
- Go through Spanish border control at Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Palma, Tenerife, or wherever you land.
- Follow the same 90-day-in-180 rule.
The only change is one 10-minute form and €7, done once every three years.
For most U.S. and Canadian travelers, ETIAS is a minor logistical step, not a barrier. Once you have it, you can forget about it for three years.
