Everyone knows Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt. Cologne is catching up fast, and for good reason.

Cologne's Christmas market isn't one market; it's several, scattered through the old town, each with its own personality, and all of them lit up beneath the Gothic towers of the Kölner Dom. More travelers are discovering it every year, drawn by a setting few other German cities can match, a UNESCO cathedral rising directly above the stalls.

Five nights here are enough to work through them properly: the Cathedral market first, then Alter Markt's traditional stalls, Rudolfplatz's fairy-tale theme and ice rink, and Heumarkt's quieter corner of the old town. In between, try Kölsch, the city's own beer, served in small glasses by waiters called Köbes who keep bringing more until you tell them to stop, and take a walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge, covered in thousands of padlocks left by visitors.

Before flying home, two nights in Frankfurt close the trip at the Römerberg Christmas market, one of Germany's oldest, set in the historic square rebuilt after the war. Try Bethmännchen, Frankfurt's own marzipan Christmas cookie, and if you're up for something local, a glass of Ebbelwoi, the city's traditional apple wine, in the Sachsenhausen district.

One German Christmas, one Yes Getaways opportunity.
