How Many Days Do You Need in Spain? Itineraries from 5 to 14

???? ITINERARY GUIDE

Spain is bigger than most first-time visitors expect. Madrid to Seville is 500 kilometres. Barcelona to Málaga is 1,000. The AVE high-speed network makes distances feel smaller, but you still need to be honest about how much you can fit into a week.

Here are realistic itineraries for 5, 7, 10, and 14 days, based on what actually works rather than what looks good on a spreadsheet.

The short answer

5 days: One region. Pick Barcelona + Costa Brava, Madrid + Toledo/Segovia, or Andalusia (Seville + Córdoba + Granada).

7 days: Two adjacent cities or one region deep. Madrid + Barcelona, or Andalusia loop, or Mallorca island escape.

10 days: Two regions comfortably. Madrid + Andalusia, or Barcelona + Balearics, or Madrid + Barcelona + Bilbao.

14 days: The full first-timer Spain trip: Madrid + Andalusia + Barcelona, or Madrid + Basque + Barcelona, or a serious island + mainland combo.

How to pace a Spain trip (honestly)

Three nights minimum in a big city. One in a small city is enough only if you accept you're skimming.

Two nights minimum on an island. Anything less and half your time is transfer time.

Do not stack 3 cities in 5 days. The classic first-timer mistake. Better to see 2 cities well than 3 cities badly.

Build in one full free day per week. Just to walk, sit in a café, or nap. The trip you remember is usually the day you did nothing planned.

Book the Alhambra 2-3 months ahead. Especially April-June and September-October. The 8:30am ticket is the coolest and least crowded.

Book the Sagrada Familia 2-3 weeks ahead. Tickets sell out for the day, though not months out.

How much can I realistically see per day?

A big city (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville): Two major monuments in a day is a comfortable pace. Three is a stretch. Four is tourism-industrial.

A small city or town (Ronda, Granada, Toledo): Everything walkable in one full day, but two nights lets you actually enjoy dinner and a sunrise.

A regional day trip (Córdoba, Segovia, Girona): Reachable by AVE and full-day-worthy but you will not sleep well without a night's stay.

Sample distances (for reality-check)

  • Madrid to Seville: 2h 30min by AVE. 5h by car.
  • Madrid to Barcelona: 2h 30min by AVE. 6h by car.
  • Seville to Granada: 3h by car. 3h 30min by bus. No direct AVE (yet).
  • Seville to Málaga: 2h by car. 2h 30min via AVE.
  • Barcelona to Palma: 45min by flight, 8h by ferry.
  • Madrid to Bilbao: 4h 30min by Alvia train, 4h by car, 1h by flight.
  • Málaga to Ronda: 1h 30min by car. 1h by high-speed bus.

Bottom line

Match your itinerary to your days, not the other way around. 5 days: one region. 7 days: two adjacent regions or one deep. 10 days: two regions with room to breathe. 14 days: the definitive first-timer Spain trip.

If you have 5 days, do not try to see Madrid and Barcelona and Seville. If you have 14 days, do not try to add Portugal or Morocco. Save Spain for Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough for Spain? Enough for one region well: Barcelona, Madrid, or Andalusia essentials. Not enough for a "Spain overview" tour.

Is 7 days enough for Spain? Yes, for two cities (Madrid + Barcelona) or one region deep (Andalusia loop or Mallorca).

Is 10 days enough for Spain? Yes, for two regions with proper depth. The sweet spot for a well-paced first Spain trip.

Is 14 days too much for Spain? No. Spain can absorb 14 days without repetition. Most travelers underestimate the country's size and diversity.

What's the best 7-day Spain itinerary? Andalusia loop (Seville + Córdoba + Ronda + Granada + Málaga) or Madrid + Barcelona.

Can I see Spain in 3 days? Only one city (Barcelona, Madrid, or Seville) and even then not deeply. Consider adding at least 2 more days.

What's the best 10-day Spain itinerary? Madrid + Andalusia (Seville + Córdoba + Ronda + Granada + Málaga) is the classic first-timer's dream trip.

How much time do I need in Barcelona? Three to four nights minimum. Sagrada Familia + Park Güell + Casa Batlló + Barri Gòtic + Barceloneta + at least one day trip (Montserrat, Girona, or Costa Brava).

How much time do I need in Madrid? Three nights minimum. Prado + Reina Sofía + Retiro + Malasaña + one day trip (Toledo or Segovia).

How much time do I need in Seville? Two to three nights. Cathedral + Alcázar + Barrio Santa Cruz + Triana + flamenco evening.

How much time do I need for the Alhambra? A half-day inside (3-4 hours). Book the 8:30am slot for the best light and smallest crowds. Add a Granada afternoon (Albaicín, tapas) and a second night to enjoy the city.

Is it possible to see Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville in 7 days? Technically yes, but it's exhausting. Two full days in each leaves no margin for jet lag or surprises. Better to drop one and go deeper.
