The wondrous week, which first began in 1997, is hosted annually by a plethora of professionals and renowned organizations, with this year's festivities including collaboration and collective hosting from the COAM Architecture Foundation, the Official Association of Architects of Madrid, the Madrid City Council and the Community of Madrid. Madrid's Architectural Heritage: Through the Ages

Madrid is home to numerous stunning landmarks spanning several historical periods and reflecting a wide array of distinct architectural styles. Among the most noteworthy of Madrid architectural gems are the Royal Palace of Madrid, Buen Retiro Park, the National Library, and the Golden Triangle of Art consisting of a trio of iconic Madrid museums: the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum, and the Thyseen-Bornemisza Museum. Let's now take a closer look at a few of these historical periods and which Madrid buildings represent each.

Madrid Architecture: The Medieval Era 

While remnants of Madrid's medieval architecture are few and far between, the lion's share of these bastions are found within the Almendra Central. In fact, it is well documented that among these historical gems is the telltale signs of the Alcazar, a castle that once stood where the Royal Palace now reigns.

More Madrid medieval remnants can be enjoyed, including the towers of San Nicolás and San Pedro el Viejo churches, the Plaza de la Villa palace belonging to the renowned Luján family, the Gothic-styled St. Jerome Church, and the Bishop's Chapel.

Madrid Architecture: The Renaissance 

Renaissance remnants are also scarce in Spain’s capital city, but a few architectural treasures from this period still remain, including the Cisneros House holding court in the city’s iconic Plaza de la Villa), as well as the Bridge of Segovia and the Convent of Las Descalzas Reales.

Madrid Architecture: The Habsburg Influence 

No article covering Madrid's architectural heritage would be complete without mentioning the important role that the Habsburgs played in shaping it. The royal family, helmed by Philip II, took great pride in transforming Madrid into a true capital city worth recognition and praise in the 15th century. Once Philip moved his court to Madrid and established it as the royal hub, no effort or expense was spared to make Madrid spectacular — an undertaking showcasing such spectacular architectural achievements as the iconic Plaza Mayor, the above-mentioned Alcázar Palace, Casa de la Villa, Prison of the Court, the Palace of the Councils, the Royal Convent of La Encarnación, the Buen Retiro Palace and Park, Imperial College, and many more.

Madrid Architecture: The Bourbons Bring New Beginnings

Not to be overshadowed by the Habsburgs' ample contributions to the Madrid architecture scene, the arrival of the Bourbons was equally noteworthy, as this period saw the now burnt-down Alcazar Palace replaced with the still-standing — and far more opulent and impressive  — Royal Palace of Madrid. Eagle-eyed architecture enthusiasts will easily see that this castle leans more toward the French design influence, with many similarities akin to the iconic French masterpiece the Louvre Palace. A few more structures of note during this period were St. Michael's Basilica and the Church of Santa Barbara, among others.

King Charles III would later come on the scene, leading to the creation of such gems as the Prado Museum, the  Puerta de Alcalá, the Royal Observatory, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande, the Casa de Correos in Puerta del Sol, the Real Casa de la Aduana, and more.

Madrid Architecture: Urban Planning and Modernization

The 19th century saw Madrid's modernization shift into high gear, the telltale signs of which can still be seen today all along the Gran Via, a spectacular thoroughfare boasting exemplary examples of all manners of architectural styles. New ideations of laying out the capital city in patterns of collective communities (now known as neighborhoods) also began to evolve — an initiative initially known as the Plan Castro. Madrid's architectural heritage grew and adapted with the times, soon encompassing the Neo-Medejar style, Gothic revival styles, the neo-plateresque and the neo-baroque leanings, Art-Nouveau, and many, many more.

Following the Civil War in the 1930s, the Francoist dictatorship leaned into the totalitarian and Fascist architectural style, taking a marked departure from leaning toward the previous glory of aesthetic appeal. This less showy style of Madrid architecture can be seen in the Teatro Clara Eugenia, Colegio Mayor San Pablo, and others. Fast forward to today, and Madrid has seen the introduction of skyscrapers, a newfangled and impressive International airport, a railway station, a Metro line, and much, much more in the way of architectural advancements.
