Slovenia Road Trip: Ljubljana, Lakes & Valleys

The Yes Getaways Slovenia Road Trip includes round-trip flights, 8 nights of hotel accommodation across Ljubljana, Bled, Bovec, and Piran, a rental car for the full duration of the trip, and all taxes and fees related to the booking. Airport transfers, meals, excursions, and city taxes are not included. All activities in the day-by-day itinerary are suggestions and carry an additional cost.

Yes. Slovenia is one of the more approachable self-drive destinations in Europe. Roads are well maintained, signage is clear, and distances between stops are short: Ljubljana to Bled is around 45 minutes, Bled to Bovec around 2 hours (over the Vršič Pass in summer), Bovec to Piran around 2.5 hours and Piran to Ljubljana around 1.5 hours. Mountain routes near Triglav National Park can be narrow, so a GPS or offline map is worth having. Traffic drives on the right.

A rental car is included for all 8 nights, covering the full circular route from Ljubljana Airport. The standard vehicle is a small or compact manual car. Automatic transmission is available on request at an additional cost. You will need a valid driver's license and passport at pickup. The car is collected on arrival at Ljubljana Airport on day 1 and returned there on departure day.

The rental includes basic third-party liability insurance. Upgrading to a collision damage waiver (CDW) or additional coverage is possible at an extra cost and can be arranged through the rental company at pickup or in advance. 

Tolls are not included in the package price. Slovenia has its own road toll system and charges may apply depending on the roads you use during the trip. We recommend checking current toll requirements before you travel. Parking is available throughout the route but is not always free or on-site. 

Important for Piran: Visitors are not permitted to park in the historic center of Piran. If your hotel is located in the historic center, you must leave your rental car in one of the designated parking areas outside the historic center, near the main entrances to the town.

From these parking areas, you can continue to the historic center on foot or by local transport, depending on your hotel's location. Parking fees and availability vary by car park and are not included in the package.

The package includes 3- to 5-star hotels across four distinct areas: central Ljubljana or surroundings, the Lake Bled area with views of the lake or a short walk to it, Bovec town in the Soča Valley, and Piran or the nearby Portorož coast. Hotel location and category vary depending on which property is assigned or selected. Some Ljubljana hotels are close to the Old Town; others are further out and better reached by car. In Piran, the historic center is largely car-free and visitors are not permitted to park there. Guests staying in the historic center will need to leave their rental car at a designated parking area outside the historic center, near one of the main entrances to the town, and continue to the hotel on foot or by local transport.

In Piran, parking in the historic center is prohibited for visitors. If your hotel is located within the historic center, you will need to park your rental car at one of the main designated parking areas located just outside the town, near the entrances to Piran. You can then reach the historic center on foot or by local transport.

Hotels located outside the historic center may have different parking arrangements, including private or nearby public parking. We recommend checking the parking options for your specific hotel before arrival, as parking fees are not included in the package price.

No. Activities including the Bled Island pletna boat, Ljubljana Castle funicular, Savica Waterfall hike, Vogel Cable Car, and Soča Valley rafting are all optional and at additional cost. The day-by-day itinerary is a suggestion, not a set programme. You choose what to book based on your interests and fitness level. 

Canadian and US passport holders do not currently need a visa for Slovenia or any Schengen Area country for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Entry requirements are the traveler's responsibility and can change, so we recommend checking with the relevant embassy or official government website before you travel.

Slovenia rewards travel in every season. Spring (April to May) brings mild temperatures around 15°C (59°F), green alpine scenery, and smaller crowds at Bled and Bovec. Summer (June to August) is the peak for outdoor activities, with temperatures up to 28°C (82°F) and full access to rafting, hiking, and cable car rides. Autumn (September to October) offers cooler days around 12°C (54°F), vivid foliage, and significantly lower prices. Winter brings snow to the mountains, temperatures near 0°C (32°F), and a quieter, more local side of Ljubljana and Piran.

The land portion of your package (hotel and car rental) is refundable if cancelled at least 14 days before your travel date. Airfare is non-refundable from the moment it is issued, but the Yes Getaways team will always check with the airline on your behalf to explore available options. Contact the team as soon as you know you need to cancel. Travel insurance with cancellation cover is strongly recommended.
