The scene: Liesl and Rolf sing "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" in a glass gazebo. The gazebo dance scene.
Where: Hellbrunn Palace, 4km south of Salzburg old town (bus 25 from downtown, 15 min).
Cost: Gazebo is outside the palace on the grounds — free to view exterior. Palace entry: €14.
What to expect: The gazebo was moved from the palace's original location to a more accessible spot near the parking area (too many tourists were damaging the surrounding grounds). It's smaller than the film makes it appear. Locked to prevent visitors dancing on the bench (a Chicago tourist broke her leg trying it in 2010).
Also here: Hellbrunn's famous Trick Fountains — 17th-century water features that surprise visitors (dress accordingly, you may get wet). Worth visiting for their own sake even without the Sound of Music connection.

3. Nonnberg Abbey (Stift Nonnberg)

Cost: Free to visit the church and outer courtyard. The nunnery itself is closed to the public.
What to expect: Actual working Benedictine abbey, established in 714 AD (the oldest continuously operating convent in the German-speaking world). The real Maria Kutschera (later Maria von Trapp) was a novice here in the 1920s. The film's exterior shots are real; the interiors were sets in Los Angeles.

4. Leopoldskron Palace (backside of the Von Trapp Villa)
The scene: The backside of the Von Trapp family villa with the lake. The children fall into the lake. The garden terrace scenes.
Where: Leopoldskron Lake, 3km southwest of central Salzburg.
Cost: The palace is a private hotel and school (Salzburg Global Seminar). External viewing from the lake path is free.
What to expect: You can walk the lakeside path opposite the palace, take the classic photo across the water. Where: The film uses several Alpine locations near Salzburg. The most photographed meadow was near Werfen (40 min south) and near Untersberg (10 min south).
Cost: Various (Untersberg cable car €30 round trip).
What to expect: Neither meadow is signposted as "Sound of Music location" — this is Alpine Austria and the meadows look like any Alpine meadow. Untersberg is the closest to Salzburg, accessible by cable car, and has a genuine "Do Re Mi" panorama.
